Displaced Choreographies: A Many-Legged Dance for Your Two Legs (2025)

for mixed ensemble (8min)

Instrumentation:

Flute, Oboe, Bongos (1 player), Chinese Suspended Cymbal (1 player), Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello

This work creates a space where different dance-inspired figures collide. Through subtle transformation and realignment, I sought to explore how they could either fuse into new grooves or stay stubbornly apart. Various states emerge as the piece unfolds — chaotic, pulsating, farcical, and so on — each overflowing with distinct evocations of movement. The ensemble is eager for unanimity, but often finds itself less than successful. The figures drift in and out, barreling toward new and wondrous forms of dislocation.

Displaced Choreographies was first performed on 28 November 2025 in Mannheim, Germany, by Ensemble Incontro of the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts, conducted by Jonte Schröder.
